Reflect, Reset, and Recharge: A Pre-New Year’s Guide for Moms
The final days of the year are always a mix of emotions—relief, exhaustion, nostalgia, and maybe even a dash of excitement for what’s to come. As moms, it’s easy to let this time get swept up in the holiday chaos, but it’s also the perfect opportunity to pause and prepare for the year ahead.
Here’s how I want to approach the end of the year to feel refreshed and ready for what’s next.
1. Reflect on the Past Year
Before diving into the future, take a moment to look back. What went well this year? What challenges did you overcome?
I like to journal (or think in the shower) my thoughts using prompts like:
- What was my biggest accomplishment this year?
- What was the hardest lesson I learned?
- What am I most grateful for?
If journaling isn’t your thing, try a casual reflection chat with your partner, a close friend, or even your kids—it’s amazing what new perspectives can emerge from those conversations.
2. Set Intentions Instead of Resolutions
Resolutions can feel rigid and overwhelming, so I prefer setting intentions instead. These are guiding principles rather than strict goals.
For example:
- Instead of “I’ll work out every day,” try “I’ll prioritize movement that feels good for my body.”
- Instead of “I’ll cook all our meals from scratch,” try “I’ll focus on meal planning to reduce stress.”
3. Declutter Your Space (and Your Mind)
There’s something magical about starting the new year with a clean slate. Spend 10-15 minutes each day tackling small decluttering projects—like that overflowing junk drawer or the kids’ toy bin.
Don’t forget your digital space, too! Unsubscribe from emails you never open, delete old screenshots, and organize your digital calendar for the coming year.
4. Celebrate Your Wins
This is a big one. As moms, we often downplay our accomplishments because they feel “small” or “just part of the job.” But everything you’ve done this year—big or small—deserves celebration.
Some ideas:
- Create a “wins” jar and write down your proudest moments to look back on next year.
- Treat yourself to something you’ve been wanting, whether it’s a cozy new sweater or a solo coffee date.
- Share your favorite memories with loved ones during a year-end family night.
5. Start a New Family Tradition
Ending the year with a meaningful family activity can set the tone for the new year. Some of our favorite traditions include:
- A Gratitude Jar: Write one thing you’re thankful for each day during December, then read them aloud on New Year’s Eve.
- A Vision Board Night: Gather magazines, craft supplies, and snacks to create boards that represent each family member’s dreams for the coming year.
- A Year-in-Review Slideshow: Collect photos from the year and share them as a family, reminiscing about the moments that made you laugh, cry, and grow.
The end of the year isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. Reflecting, setting intentions, and taking small steps to recharge will set you up for a more mindful and joyful new year.
Let’s welcome the new year with open arms and a refreshed spirit. Here’s to a 2025 filled with growth, gratitude, and plenty of laughter.
