Grocery Store Temper Tantrum

This IBd Life (2)

“What’s your go-to strategy for handling tantrums or meltdowns in public places, and do you have any tips for keeping your cool while managing these situations?” -Aveline

My go-to strategy for grocery store tantrums? Nothing really. I googled and can you get a more typical response?

“When faced with tantrums or meltdowns in public, one effective strategy I’ve found is to stay calm and maintain a reassuring demeanor. It’s important to remember that children often act out due to frustration or overstimulation, so offering empathy and understanding can help de-escalate the situation. I try to address the immediate needs of my child, whether it’s providing comfort, a distraction, or a brief break from the situation. Additionally, I find that setting clear boundaries and expectations beforehand can prevent meltdowns from occurring in the first place. Overall, patience, consistency, and a sense of humor are key when navigating these challenging moments in public.”

Um thank you and no thank you. Sometimes you need to pick up the said child and just go. It sometimes works, but children are not robots. I think part of making it as a parent is dealing with at least one embarrassing meltdown. However if it is a recurring issue, maybe dig deeper and see what is causing the meltdown. Is your child hangry? Is the store tough for them? Can it be arranged that you don’t go to the store as often. Instacart and Shipt are my favorite inventions.  Another favorite is Dr. Becky at Good Inside. She has some good practical advice, and has really useful tips. At the end of the day we can’t be perfect and neither can your child. You got this mama!
